So far in our National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) masterclass, we detailed how to check your NDIS eligibility, outlined how to submit your first access request, and discussed the different ways of managing your NDIS funds. The final step on your NDIS journey is understanding the support services you can receive under the scheme. In this article, we outline the different supports you can expect to access with your NDIS plan.
When you receive NDIS support, your funding is allocated towards support services which are reasonable and necessary for you to meet your personal short and long-term NDIS goals. These services are funded through three types of support budgets:
- Core Support
- Capacity Building Support
- Capital Support
Core support services are designed to help you with everyday living and needs. Within this category, your funds may go to:
- consumables, such as continence aides or assistive technology,
- daily activities, such as a support worker to assist with self-care, and
- social and community participation through social or recreational activities.
Capacity Building Support
Capacity Building supports are designed to build an independent life by acquiring the necessary skills. This could include therapeutic supports which may involve an initial consultation with an occupational therapist who may prescribe a wheelchair for community access, or an exercise physiologist who may develop an exercise plan for easier mobility with less pain.
The NDIS describes Capital Supports as “higher cost items like assistive technology and equipment for mobility, communication and recreational inclusion such as wheelchairs or modifications to your car.” Capital Support funding also includes access to Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) for eligible participants.
NDIS Price Guide and Support Catalogue
Each year the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) releases their ‘NDIS Price Guide and Support Catalogue’ which details which health support services are funded by the NDIS over the next 12 months. As the guide is subject to change, it is important for participants to review it each year with their Support Coordinator or Local Area Coordinator (LAC).
Within the NDIS Price Guide, you can find all of the services that are currently being supported by the NDIS. To date, there are 15 categories with over 90 disability-related supports funded by the NDIS:
- Assistance with Daily Life
- Assistance with Social & Community Participation
- Assistive Technology
- Home Modifications
- Coordination of Supports
- Improved Living Arrangements
- Increased Social and Community Participation
- Finding and Keeping a Job
- Improved Relationships
- Improved Health and Wellbeing
- Improved Learning
- Improved Life Choices
- Improved Daily Living
There is no definitive list of NDIS supported services, but as a general rule, your support requests should be reasonable, necessary and help you to accomplish your short or long-term goals. To provide clarity to the nuances of NDIS service requests, we have provided two examples below which details two fictitious scenarios where individuals require NDIS support.
Scenario 1, Alex is in a wheelchair and wants to improve his physical wellbeing. During his annual NDIS review meeting, Alex requests funds for a personal trainer. The service request is rejected because a personal trainer is not reasonable nor necessary. Alex is then advised to apply for NDIS support for an exercise physiologist to develop an exercise plan in tangent with a gym membership to achieve his wellbeing goals.
Scenario 2, Christina was in an accident last year which resulted in her developing depression. She is not sure if her current funding will be enough to cover private therapy sessions. Therefore, Christina decides to speak with her support coordinator to see what her options are. Her support coordinator points out that Christina’s current funding is not enough for private therapy sessions, but she can opt for the more cost-efficient group-based therapy sessions and receive similar results.
