The Sewing Basket

My Career: Our professionals help you find the right job to suit your abilities. The Sewing Basket, previously Fabric Needlecraft and More, will open its doors this September with a new look and new locations in Sydney. The Sewing Basket supplies a wide range of unique fabrics and patterns, embroidery stock, books, knitting, haberdashery plus much more.

A team of enthusiastic and experienced volunteers work together with supported workers in our shops to help you with all your fabric and craft needs. Participation in the running of the shop enables supported workers with a disability to learn valuable job and interpersonal skills and encourages their inclusion in the local community.

Come along and meet our dedicated team who will assist you with our large variety of stock and help you with ideas and suggestions for your next creation. We also receive a wide range of vintage and rare products from individuals and estates that can be mixed with the latest patterns and fabrics for something exceptional.

Stay tuned for new locations and opening hours as we open our doors again this September. Follow Achieve Australia on Facebook to receive the latest updates.

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS

From its humble beginnings, Achieve Australia created a Social Enterprise from a traditional opportunity shop to help create employment opportunities to support workers with a disability.

When a needlecraft store went out of business in 1998, all the remaining stock was donated to The Crowle Home – which later became Achieve Australia. The Crowle Home took the remaining stock and sold it at a one-off needlecraft sale to raise much-needed funds.

Word of the successful sale spread and further donations of fabric, wool, thread, patterns and craft supplies flooded in. So many donations were received that it became feasible to establish a shop to sell the accumulated stock. Eventually, the business was able to expand to a larger site in Meadowbank in 2013 and to Newington in 2018.

Today, more than 40 experienced and enthusiastic needlecraft hobbyists from the local community work in partnership with our supported workers who oversee everything from retail operations and customer service to sorting and stocking the shelves.

Our new locations opening this spring will provide even more opportunities into the future for the people we support.

DONATIONS

By selling what’s donated, our shop sales provide valuable funds towards supporting people with disability. Occasionally we receive items we can’t sell, so we’ve created the following list to help guide our generous donors.

Please hold on to your donations for when our new store is open, as we are unable to accept donations while we are moving.

If you are unsure about a specific donation for the shop, please contact us on 1300 22 44 38.
