The Sewing Basket – Achieve Australia's social enterprise store

The Sewing Basket supplies a wide range of unique fabrics, patterns, embroidery stock, knitting and haberdashery, plus much more.

At our stores, a team of experienced volunteers work alongside supported employees with disability. Supported employment provides staff the opportunity to learn valuable job and interpersonal skills and encourages their inclusion in the local community.

All our stock at The Sewing Basket is donated by the community, which means we are a sustainable shopping solution and have a wide range of vintage and rare products from individuals and estates. Our dedicated team will assist you with our large variety of stock and help you with ideas and suggestions for your next creation.

Celebrating Over 20 Years

From its humble beginnings, Achieve Australia created a social enterprise from a traditional opportunity shop to help create employment opportunities to support people with disability.

When a needlecraft store closed in 1998, all the remaining stock was donated to The Crowle Home – which later became Achieve Australia. The Crowle Home took the remaining stock and sold it at a one-off needlecraft sale to raise much-needed funds.

Word of the successful sale spread and further donations of fabric, wool, thread, patterns and craft supplies flooded in. So many donations were received that it became feasible to establish a shop to sell the accumulated stock. Eventually, the business expanded to a larger site in Meadowbank in 2013, to Newington and West Ryde in 2018, and in 2019, we opened our first Pop-up shop in Balmain.

Today, more than 40 experienced and enthusiastic volunteers from the local community work in partnership with our supported employees who oversee everything from retail operations and customer service to sorting and stocking the shelves.

  • Donations must be fabric or needlecraft related goods.
