A local boutique accommodation provider on the mid-north coast of NSW is forging the way for accessible holiday accommodation for people of all abilities.
In 2016, Dianne and Chris Denton were inspired to design and build a brand new type of accessible accommodation on the NSW mid-north coast known as Seafarers Diamond Beach. Since opening in 2018, the pair now welcome people of all abilities who come from far and wide to experience their local hospitality.
Dianne says it made a lot of sense to branch out into the area of accessible accommodation for a few reasons. “As a local accommodation provider, we started receiving many enquiries from people about accessible holiday accommodation, so we started to research what was out there,” recalls Dianne.
“We found out that many of the holiday options available for people with disability were very clinical and basic, which didn’t seem right to us. We wanted to offer something special that was beautiful and classy, but still accessible.”
A personal connection was also driving the pair with Chris’s Aunt, Pat, at the forefront of their minds. “Aunt Pat has had Rheumatoid arthritis from an early age and has been in a wheelchair all her life,” says Dianne.
“With limited accessible options available at the time, Chris ended up driving his 4WD right up to the shoreline of the beach one day to help Aunt Pat put her feet in the water. At 70 years old, it was the first time she had ever experienced being on the beach,” recalls Dianne.
The couple love what they do because they can see the real impact on people with disability and their families. “A family recently booked their first holiday at Seafarers after the father, who has a disability, returned from an extensive hospital stay,” explains Dianne. “The family told us after their stay that it was everything they could have hoped for, which was really special. To help create a wonderful experience and happy memories for families who have been through hard times makes it all worthwhile.”
Seafarers accommodation at Diamond Beach features accessible:
- Private pool with pool hoist
- Bathroom with roll under basin and open wide shower screen
- Ramps and pathways
- Lever door handles and taps
- Extra wide parking facilities
- Power points
The three bedroom property has a private studio room and ensuite bathroom for carers who may be providing services for families and is also dog friendly. In November 2019, Seafarers Diamond Beach won a regional tourism award for excellence in tourism and for providing a holiday experience everyone can enjoy.
“We are really proud to be able to offer the accommodation for people of all abilities to enjoy and it’s a nod to Aunt Pat what we have created,” says Dianne.
